October and November are the best months for planting most spring-blooming bulbs in our area. The best selection of bulbs, however, is in September, so remember to plan ahead. To assist with this, please check the following approximate scheduling: JULY Bearded Iris rhizomes will begin to arrive in late July. AUGUST Fall blooming bulbs. eg Saffron Crocus and Colchicum. SEPTEMBER Narcissus, Tulips and the main selection of bulbs usually arrive the first or second week. OCTOBER Dutch Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) in mid October, along with seed potatoes. Many items may be sold out by November, some limited items even before October. If you won’t be planting immediately, most bulbs can be stored in a cool, dark place or the refrigerator (not the freezer) in paper bags (not plastic). Tulips and Hyacinths especially benefit from an extra bit of chilling for warm winter areas like ours. Allow at least six to eight weeks of chill prior to planting these types. To help you make choices, the fall bulb list will be available mid July. – Griff |
