Where our food comes from is a major concern for all of us in an age when factory-farming is prevalent. Anyone who hasn’t noticed the increase in organic food products simply has not been shopping. As public awareness of their benefits increases, so does demand. As that demand increases, prices come down and more options show up in markets. Yet, one niche that has been left largely vacant is that of the grower of organic fruit-bearing plants for organic gardeners and farmers; specifically berry plants such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and the like.

As you are probably aware, by seeking locally-grown, organic produce, we not only nourish our bodies better, but we are helping to heal our planet. “How’s that?” you may ask. By following strict guidelines (for California farmers we prefer those of California Certified Organic Farmers [CCOF]) the grower/farmer can eliminate their dependency on energy-intensive chemical production, and ozone-depleting gasses, while at the same time building the soil in a sustainable manner. In the past, organic gardeners have been unwittingly supporting the use of dangerous chemicals such as methyl-bromide by purchasing non-organic plants, and then converting to organic practices prior to harvest and consumption.

Over the past decade Berkeley Hort has sought organic growers of berry plants, and we’ve found unwillingness in this industry to give up the chemicals that lead to big short-term profits. That seems to be changing. In addition to the year-round availability of organic herbs and annual vegetable starts, BHN is introducing a limited line of certified organic berry plants. Currently we offer CCOF grown strawberries only, but we are working with concerned growers to develop a line of organic woody berry plants for your home garden. Read Ché’s article further along in this publication for more information. This is a concept whose time has come.

Bon Appétit.
