June at Berkeley Hort

Pruning Japanese Maples

Saturday, June 7
10:00 am

We're delighted that aesthetic pruner Yuki Nara will be returning to speak about Japanese Maple Pruning. Ms. Nara has been teaching and practicing this art for many years, and will discuss why, when and how to prune Japanese Maples in the summer.

Gardening for Bees

Sunday, June 15
10:30 am

Professor Gordon Frankie of UC Berkeley will talk about his experimental bee gardens and discuss the flowering plants preferred by California native bumble and other bees. Dr. Frankie’s research in Berkeley and Albany has identified over 81 local bee species, almost all natives. He’ll discuss which native and exotic species of flowering plants are most attractive to the various bees.

Fruit Tree Pruning

Sunday, June 22
10:30 am

Summer pruning is essential to keep young fruit trees to a human scale. Resident fruit tree enthusiast Ann Ralph will demonstrate Summer Pruning Techniques on our established nursery Fuji Apple and show you how casual pruning decisions can be. The class will then migrate to this year’s stock of trees for further discussion, questions, and hands-on experience.
