Characteristics
of Raspberries:
All of our raspberry varieties this year are of the "EVERBEARING" or "PRIMOCANE" type.
Fruiting
Season:
FIRST CROP is in the fall, produced on the upper third of the current
season's strongest canes. A larger SECOND CROP is produced in the spring
or summer on the lower portion of the fall crop's canes. (If fall-bearing
canes are pruned to the ground after fruiting, a single crop will occur
in late spring instead of two crops. This "annual cane" method
eliminates overwintering pests and diseases.)
Culture:
Raspberries prefer FULL SUN and a MILD-SUMMER CLIMATE such as ours here
in Berkeley and around the Bay.
SOIL should be deep, well-drained, and with average, even moisture.
FERTILIZE with a balanced plant food when blossoms appear.
PRUNE dying tops of fall canes after fruiting. Spring-bearing canes should
be pruned to the ground after fruiting.
SPACE plants 2'-4' apart in rows 6'-7' apart.
TRAIN the plants on a stake-and-wire system or support individual plants
with a single stake.
FIRST HARVEST will probably be small, occurring this fall.
Types of
Raspberries:
'AMITY'
Large, firm, dark red berries of excellent flavor and superior quality
with classic raspberry flavor. Excellent fresh; good for
freezing and canning. Although 'Amity' doesn't bear quite as heavily as
'Heritage', it is more resistant to root rot and therefore a
better choice for heavier soils. Aphid resistant. 'Amity' will produce
one crop on first year growth in the fall, another the
following June on the 2 year old wood that did not fruit the previous
fall.
'HERITAGE'
Large, sweet, dark red berries are tasty and mild, of superior quality,
good for eating fresh, canning, freezing, and preserves.
The tall canes are quite sturdy and rarely need support. Very productive,
strong and vigorous, suckers prolifically and spreads
rapidly. Somewhat tolerant of heavy soils but will develop root rot in
poorly drained areas. Moderate summer crop with a
heavier, superior fall crop. An excellent variety for the home gardener.
'SUMMIT'
Medium-sized, cone-shaped, dark red, firm fruit. Excellent flavor.
Ten days earlier and much less spiny than 'Heritage'. Does
quite well in heavier soils, resists root rot.
